This is the history of the Del Mar Fair
Since the 1880s, San Diego's Del Mar Fair has been a tradition! Agricultural festivals are common at county fairs in the United States. Members of the community participated in contests such as pie baking, fruit and vegetable tasting, and horse race events. In 1936, the Del Mar Fairgrounds opened as the venue for the fair, after moving to various locations. The 22nd District Agricultural Association purchased the expansive 370-acre beachfront property, and San Diego County Fair moved there. It has been an annual event in San Diego since 1917, except for two years during WWII and two years during the Covid19 pandemic in 2020. As part of the 2021 festival, a smaller version was held, and the full fair returned in 2022.
There have been several changes in the fair's name over the years. As early as the 1950s, the fair was renamed Southern California Exposition and San Diego County Fair. The Del Mar Fair was officially renamed in the 1980s. Del Mar Fair is still the official name of the event, even though it changed to San Diego County Fair in 2002. There is no need to get confused if you hear multiple names thrown around; the San Diego County Fair and the Del Mar Fair are the same thing!
