There are more than 4000 animals living in the Zoo, which is located adjacent to downtown San Diego in Balboa Park. The Zoo spans 100 acres, and it includes more than 800 species from around the world. After your arrival, we recommend joining the Guided Bus Tour to get a sense of the various areas where you may want to spend more time. With a unique walking experience, the Zoo showcases animals as naturally as possible, along with shows and animal presentations throughout the day. You can add even more excitement to your visit by booking a special tour from Animals in Action, Inside Look, or Discovery Tour. Discover what goes on behind the scenes, and meet our animal ambassadors. Explore nature at the 32-acre Denny Sanford Wildlife Explorers Basecamp, an experience designed for people of all ages. In addition to eight buildings and habitats dispersed throughout four different habitat zones, Wildlife Explorers Basecamp reflects the history of the historic Children's Zoo in San Diego. From leafcutter ants to orb weaver spiders, to prairie dogs and sloths, the area blends innovation and immersive technology. Play opportunities are available, as are oversized sculptures based on species themes and a 15-foot stone globe, which rotates on a thin layer of water.
